A jaundiced definition of running shoes is that of 'coffins for your feet'! In spite of all the advances in shoe technology since the 1970s, the rate of injury among runners has stayed more or less the same. So don't expect a shoe to save you from poor running form, and don't believe everything you read or hear about what a shoe is supposed to do. For example, there is some evidence that anti-pronation shoes truly make the tendency to over-pronate worse! A much best clarification is to enhance your use, which in turn will help you to preclude your feet from rolling too much.

The unlikeness in the level of feedback gained when running in shoes, compared to running barefoot, is phenomenal. Whatever who has tried the latter will know how much more sensitive one's feet come to be when unshod. This doesn't mean that every person should try and imitate the great Ethiopian marathon runner Abebe Bikila and throw their shoes in the bin. But if you can find a safe place to experiment with barefoot running, free of sharp objects and unpleasant animal deposits, have a go.

Running Shoes

John Woodward, barefoot runner par excellence, organizes regular Natural Running courses. He exhorts participants to palpate the resilience and responsiveness of the foot in its natural state. I found that, even after two hour spent gambolling colse to the hills, I had no Achilles tendon pain in spite of losing the cushioning under my heel. It also became apparent that runners' strides changed as well, becoming shorter, quicker and less on the heel. Although I do not train barefoot, I have compromised by wearing 'the least whole of shoe' that still enables me to stay injury-free. Training for a marathon in racing shoes left my feet feeling constantly sore, so I went back to a race/trainer model with a little more cushioning. However, whenever inherent I take the shoes off and do my warm-up drills or strides barefoot.

Orthotics are other beloved and expensive 'solution' to the injury woes suffered by runners. Like some other miracle cures, they can occasionally be life-transforming. However, the results are less spectacular for many other runners in need of help. It's worth remembering the old Zen saying, 'Wherever you go, there you are' - run with bad use and poor technique and you are asking for trouble. In such cases, orthotics may merely help a runner mask more basic issues for a while.

Everyone should take satisfaction in performing the art of running well, regardless of what that means in practice; either with shoes or running barefoot.
